New Heat Pump Accelerator Program (NEHPA)
Feb 1, 2026 to Dec. 31, 2029 a new energy incentive became available approved by the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to accelerate the use of electric heat pumps in existing residential homes in the New England states.
A $650 incentive is available to residential customers for equipment purchased through participating distributors of the program, for air-source heat pumps and heat pump water heaters. One-to-four-unit homes, mobile homes, condominiums, or apartments qualify but the incentive is not available to newly constructed projects at this time.
Customers participating in State efficiency programs are eligible to stack incentives, and customers of any heating fuel type (gas, electric, oil, propane or wood) may qualify. Sales made prior to Feb1, 2026 will not qualify.
Air-source heat pumps >5.4 tons qualify if they meet the Energy Star® cold climate v6.1 criteria. All Energy Star®-certified heat pump water heaters including 240v, 120v and split systems qualify for the $300 incentive.
The Accelerator Program’s incentive is designed to complement participating states’ incentives and speed up efforts in participating states. The new Incentive commonly stacks with incentives from the following entities:
- Clean Heat RI
- Energize CT
- Mass Save
- NH Saves
- RI Energy
- Your local municipal electric light plant
